When Midway College (www.midway.edu) decided to make a foray into the realm of distance education, it engaged Learning House, Inc. (www.learninghouse.com) to assist with the creation and execution of its courses. After two trial semesters this school year, the college’s online programs will be launched in July 2005.

Hand-in-Hand Partnership

Led by a commitment to “operate ethically, professionally and with integrity,” Dr. George R. Sutton and Dr. Tony Ogiamien set out to bring their passion for education to the world. That goal is now the mission statement of their independent, for-profit university, Heritage University. The first course launches March 7, 2005.

Sutton and Ogiamien, law school graduates and former educators, met in 2001 and discovered their concurrent interests. “Heritage University was just born out of our mutual backgrounds in education administration and law,” said Sutton, and the two opted to go out on their own, founding a new university.

Chat sessions during an online class are wonderful for many reasons. They help build community within the class. One of the advantages of online learning is that it often creates a more diverse student body. During chat sessions, students and professors have the benefit of being exposed to the thoughts and experiences of students from all over the country. Chat sessions can also fulfill the need that many students have for connection to their fellow students and professors. Chatting makes students feel that they are a part of the institution and that their courses are more like a traditional class. However, chat sessions can be a challenge to manage. Students love to chat away about everything from their jobs to their pets. Here are some simple ideas for better managing chat sessions and keeping topics focused.
