The 1944 G.I. Bill of Rights was widely regarded as a transformative piece of legislation, both for the American socio-economic landscape and the field of U.S. higher education. Through its financial allowances, servicemen returning home from the battlefields of World War II were provided with scholarships to cover the cost of studying at the higher education institution of their choice.  In 2007, a new G.I. Bill was introduced to Congress. This bill has reached the final stages of review this month — marking another educational milestone for veterans.

The times they are a changin’ … in higher education.

Geographic shifts, demographic shifts and other changes are contributing to potentially radical alterations in the field of post-secondary education and its production of college and university-bound high school graduates. In general, a significant change is expected in numbers, as downward trends in enrollment are predicted in coming years. As a result, colleges and universities across the nation are developing new initiatives in order to address these demographic variations, including increased financial aid options and the launch of new online education opportunities.

Only a few months have passed in 2008; however, this short period has brought many new beginnings for The Learning House, Inc. Learning House is excited to welcome several new clients to our online family, including Founders College (Virginia), Grace College (Indiana), Hiwassee College (Tennessee), Louisiana College  (Louisiana) and Midland Lutheran College (Nebraska).  Every client brings a unique vision to the table of how online education can benefit its goals and objectives.  In each case, we are proud to be a part of not only the client’s online initiative, but the institution’s overall academic mission. 

In addition, several clients have also signed on to expand their virtual campuses with additional course offerings, degree programs or certification programs. In order to express our appreciation, we would like to tell you a little more about each of these clients and their upcoming launches.

CLINTON, MS (December 31, 2007) – Online education is making it easier than ever to earn a nursing degree from Mississippi College (www.mc.edu). Mississippi College will launch a new set of online nursing courses in May 2008 as part of an RN-BSN completion program. The implementation of these new online courses is part of fulfilling Mississippi College’s mission to eliminate time conflicts experienced by nurses who are unable to take substantial time away from their jobs.  Online instruction “makes it more accessible,” remarks Mary Jean Padgett, Nursing School Dean at Mississippi College. “After all, nurses just can’t take off work.”

Learning House, Inc.’s Founder and President, Dr. Denzil Edge, was a guest speaker at this year’s annual Registry for College and University Presidents. The conference was held on the first week of November in Louisville, Kentucky.  Registry President, Bryan E. Carlson, invited Dr. Edge to speak at this year’s meeting because he was “impressed with Dr. Edge’s passion to ‘save’ small colleges” and online higher education in general. At the forefront of his speech, Dr. Edge informed attendees that distance learning is a way to diversify. More importantly, online education is a way to put small colleges on a level playing field with larger universities.
